“I’m sorry” are powerful words.
You’ll eventually lose your cool with your child. You’re human and you’ll snap sooner or later.
But the good news is that you can apologize. An apology repairs the ugh-oy-parenting moment.
Here’s how to reconnect after a not-really-great moment:
💟 STOP before saying a word
💟 THINK about what you’re going to say
💟 REALIZE it’s scary for a child when a parent is angry with them
💟 ACKNOWLEDGING the mistake is the first step
💟 SAY “I’m sorry for x-y-z-“
💟 EXPLAIN why it happened -briefly
💟 ACKNOWLEDGE your toddler’s feelings
An apology goes something like this: “I’m sorry I got angry. You didn’t deserve that. Sometimes Mommy gets angry and I need to work on staying calm. I know it’s scary when Mommy yells. I love you so-o-o-o- much and I’m so sorry I upset you.”
Apologizing won’t lessen a child’s respect for you.
Reassure your child with a hug-snuggle-cuddle moment…then move on. 🖊 @healthiest_baby
