Spices are a great way to introduce new flavors, and to make a food that you serve frequently seem completely different. I’m not sure where it got started that we need to serve babies bland food, but it’s not true!!! 💁‍♀️Babies can handle seasonings, and in fact often really enjoy them.

Just what kind of seasonings you ask? The only thing you need to avoid is salt. Seriously. Everything else is fair game, even spicy things. Keep in mind if you eat spicy things that your baby got a taste of some of it in the amniotic fluid while you were pregnant. And if you’re breast feeding, they still get a taste of the spicy foods you eat. So they are likely to tolerate them more than you can imagine!

Does that mean that right out of the gate you should give your baby seriously spicy food? Nope. But if you start with a small amount of spicy seasonings, you can then start to build up their tolerance as they get used to it.

If you yourself don’t use spices often, here is a little cheatsheet of some of my favorite seasonings for babies. Start with just adding one to something you’re cooking. A fruit, vegetable, meat. Even if you aren’t really sure what it will taste like! Remember, babies like some really weird flavor combinations, so they’re a great audience to experiment on. 😆

Start with just one per food so that you can figure out what it tastes like, and then start experimenting with combinations. I promise, it’s ok to experiment. And even if your baby doesn’t like it, there’s no guarantee they would have eaten it without the seasonings either!

Don’t feel like you have to season absolutely everything, because plain is a good flavor for them to know, too. But adding variety with spices is incredibly easy, and can really stretch the food that you are already making!
